How much money do I need to move?
Add up the cash due before the keys are in your hand, and see how the rent compares with your income. Every starting number is a placeholder: type your own.

Not sure what the move itself costs? Work out a do-it-yourself move, then type the total under getting there.
The app keeps the budget next to the boxes, the dates and what every landlord and mover promised, on your phone. No account, and it works with no signal.
How this works
The total. It adds the rent due at signing (one month, or two if the last month is due too), the deposit, every fee you type, the cost of getting there and first things for the new place, then adds the cushion you choose on top. The starting cushion of 10% is our own suggestion, not a rule.
The 30% line. HUD considers households that spend more than 30% of income on housing costs to be cost burdened. The Census Bureau, citing HUD, counts rent, mortgage payments and other housing costs, and calls more than 50% severely cost burdened. This page counts rent plus the utilities you pay, against income before taxes. It is a yardstick, not a rule: a landlord may use its own income test, and debts, child care and travel to work matter too.
How common it is. The Census Bureau reported that nearly half (49.7%) of renter households spent more than 30% of income on housing costs in 2023.
A first month that starts mid-month. Some leases charge only the days left in the first month, and some ask for the next full month too. Type what your lease says into the rent box, or add the difference under other move-in fees.
The deposit comes back, later. A security deposit is meant to be returned, less what the law and lease allow, after you move out. Some states limit how large it can be, and each sets a deadline for returning it. See when a deposit is due back in your state.
