The Packed Rabbit

Change of address checklist

Answer a few yes or no questions. You get your own list of who needs your new address, with the ones that have a legal deadline first.

With a date, each deadline shows the day it falls on.

Keep every address change in the app

Checks are kept in this page's address, so bookmark it or share the link to pick up where you left off. The app keeps the same list with each account's confirmation number, shows only the last 4 digits of account numbers, and works with no signal.

How this works

Deadlines first. A few address changes are required by law within a set time. Noncitizens in the U.S. must tell USCIS within 10 days of moving, with some exceptions. Men aged 18 to 25 must tell Selective Service within 10 days. With Marketplace health coverage, a move to a new ZIP code or county generally gives you 60 days to change plans, if you had qualifying coverage in the 60 days before. States set their own deadlines for a driver's license, vehicle registration and voter registration, so check yours.

The post office is not enough. Forwarding moves your mail, not your records. The IRS says to tell it directly because not all post offices forward government checks, and USCIS says a post office change does not update USCIS. Standard forwarding lasts 12 months. Magazines are forwarded for 60 days only if the sender prepaid, so change subscriptions directly.

Dates. With a move-in date, the 10-day and 60-day deadlines are counted from it. The post office date is two weeks before, because forwarding takes 7 to 10 business days to start. That date is our own suggestion: you can file up to 90 days ahead.

Everything else. Banks, insurance, utilities, doctors and the rest have no legal deadline. They are on the list because a missed letter there is the one that costs you later. Skip any that are not yours.

Still planning the move itself? Try the moving checklist by date, or for a new state, which utilities serve the new address.
