How much should I tip movers?
Tipping is optional. Here is the range most people use, worked out for your crew.
How do you want to work it out?
Your move
How did it go?
People tip toward the top for stairs, heavy or fragile pieces, bad weather, extra stops, or help putting furniture together.
On move day the app keeps the crew's names, the arrival window and the tip in one place, and numbers every box as it goes on the truck. No account, and it works with no signal.
How this works
The ranges. These are the commonly cited amounts for each mover: $20 to $50 for a day's work on a local move, $50 to $100 a day on a long-distance move, $4 to $15 an hour, or 10% to 20% of the total bill shared across the crew. "Fine" uses the bottom of the range, "Good" the middle, and "Above and beyond" the top. Customs vary by place and by job, and none of these is a rule.
Rounding. Each mover's amount is rounded to the nearest $5 (or the nearest dollar under $10) so it is easy to hand over in cash.
Who gets it. Hand each mover their own tip, so everyone gets a share. If one crew loads and another unloads, each crew gets its own tip. On a job that runs over several days, tip at the end of each day.
Cash or card. Cash is the most common way and the easiest to split. If you want to tip by card, check or app, ask the company first: a card tip may not reach each mover separately.
Food and drinks. Kind, not expected, and not part of the tip. Ask about allergies before you order.
Not paying a crew yet? Try check your mover before you pay, or if you are moving yourself, what a do-it-yourself move costs.
