The Packed Rabbit

How many moving boxes do I need?

Start from your home, then change the rooms to match. The boxes stack up as you go.

How full are your cupboards and closets?

Number every box in the app

The app gives each box a number and a photo of what's inside as you pack it, so you can find the kettle later by typing "kettle". No account, and it works with no signal.

How this works

Each room gets a typical mix of boxes. The mix is multiplied by how full your home is (Sparse is 0.7 times, Packed is 1.4 times), then added up. These are estimates, not a published standard: a room of books needs far more small boxes than a room of clothes.

RoomTypical boxes at an average fill

Which size for what

SmallHeavy things: books, tins, tools, records, files
MediumMost things: kitchen tools, shoes, toys, electronics
LargeLight, bulky things only: pillows, bedding, lampshades
Dish packThick-walled box for plates and glasses, often with dividers
WardrobeTall box with a rail, so clothes go straight from the closet on hangers

Never put heavy things in a large box: it gets too heavy to lift safely and the bottom can give way. Keep each box light enough to lift without straining. One university moving guide puts the limit at 30 to 40 pounds a box. Fill boxes to the top so they don't crush when stacked.

Tape is estimated at about 12 feet a box (an H across the top and the bottom) and 55 yards a roll. Check the length printed on the rolls you buy.

Sources: packing rules (light items in large boxes, heavy items in small boxes, no more than 30 to 40 pounds a carton, fill to the top, get more boxes than you think you'll need) from State University of New York at Fredonia, Facilities Services moving guide. Boxes per room and tape per box are our own typical figures and will vary with what you own. Checked October 2026.
