How much will it cost to move myself?
The starting numbers are only examples. Replace them with your own quotes and the total adds itself up.

How this works
Truck. For an in-town rental it is the daily rate times the days, plus the charge per mile times the miles. One-way rentals are usually quoted as one price with a set number of miles and days included; type that price and add any extra miles or days your quote charges into it.
Fuel. Miles divided by miles per gallon, times the pump price. The pump price starts at the U.S. weekly average from the Energy Information Administration: regular gasoline $4.28 a gallon and diesel $6.28, week of October 19, 2026. Prices differ by region and change every week. The 10 miles per gallon is our own placeholder: a loaded box truck uses far more fuel than a car, so ask the rental counter for your truck's figure. Many rentals also expect the tank back as full as you got it.
Damage waiver. Optional. Some personal auto policies cover a rented truck and many don't, and some exclude larger trucks, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Call your insurer first; if you're covered, set this to 0. See does my car insurance cover a rented truck.
Days on the road. There is no limit for a private driver. Federal rules let a professional truck driver drive at most 11 hours after 10 hours off. The hint above plans about 400 miles a driving day, which is our own estimate for an unfamiliar truck, not a rule. See how many hours a day should I drive.
Cushion. We suggest keeping about a tenth of the total spare for things nobody quotes: an extra day, a parking permit, a second trip to the store. That is our suggestion, not a published figure.
Every number on this page is an estimate. Rental rates, box prices and help vary a lot by city, season and day of the week, so the total is only as good as the quotes you type in. Need a box count? Try how many boxes do I need. Not sure of the truck size? Try what size truck do I need.
