How long will moving day take?
An estimate for loading, the drive and unloading, and a plan for the day. It changes as you type.

How the estimate works
- Carrying: each box takes about 2.5 minutes of one person's time for a hired crew and 3.5 for friends and family, from the room to its place in the truck. Each big piece takes about 15 minutes for a crew and 25 for friends and family, which covers wrapping it and taking legs or mirrors off.
- People: that time is split among the people carrying. Past four people, each extra person adds about half as much, because they start waiting on each other at the door and in the truck.
- Getting to the truck: stairs or an elevator add about a third; a long walk adds about a fifth. Each end is counted on its own.
- Unloading takes about four fifths as long as loading would at that place, since the truck is packed in order and nothing needs wrapping.
- The rest of the day: 15 minutes to walk through before loading and at the new place, 15 minutes to check the empty rooms, a 30-minute break when loading runs past four hours, and for a move you do yourself, an hour to pick up the truck and 30 minutes to return it.
- The range runs from a fifth faster to a third slower than the estimate. Packed, labeled boxes, a clear path and a parking spot close to the door save the most time. Unpacked rooms, a far parking spot, rain and heavy pieces like a piano or a safe add time this can't see.
Every minute above is our own rough estimate, not a measured standard, and real days vary a lot. If a mover charges by the hour, ask them for their own estimate in writing.
