What I wish I'd known · Tricky things to move

Do I have to inspect my outdoor things for spongy moths before I move?

Only if you're moving from an area under the federal spongy moth quarantine to a place outside it. The spongy moth used to be called the gypsy moth. Check the map at YourMoveSpongyMothFree.com.

If it applies, inspect your outdoor things before you go: patio furniture, grills, bikes and toys, lawn and garden tools, camping gear, trailers and vehicles. Scrape off any egg masses and destroy them in hot, soapy water or a sealed plastic bag.

Record it on the USDA self-inspection checklist, form PPQ 377, or hire a certified applicator to do it. Keep the signed form in the vehicle carrying your things, and keep it for five years.

Don't bring firewood unless it's certified and labeled. You can face penalties if you skip a required inspection.
