How do I get the old place cleaned if I've already moved away?

Ask the landlord first. Some will arrange the cleaning and take the cost from the deposit; get that price in writing. Check the lease too: many require a receipt from a professional carpet cleaner.

Book the cleaner for after the truck leaves and before you hand back the keys. Carpets take about 6 to 24 hours to dry, so leave a day before any inspection.

For access, use a lockbox, the landlord or property manager, or a neighbor you trust. Pay by card and ask for an itemized receipt and before-and-after photos of every room.

If you can't be there, ask the landlord for a video-call walkthrough or a written inspection report, and send them your own photos the same day.
